Pollination efficiency and foraging behaviour of honey bees and flies to onion Allium cepa L.

چکیده
Bees and flies are the most common visitors to onion flowers in Karnataka, but evidence for their pollination efficiency is lacking. Hence, experiments on behavioral observations were recorded using four bees (Apidae: Hymenoptera) two (Syrphidae: Diptera) species visiting (Allium cepa L.) at experimental fields of ICAR-Indian Institute Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, India (13.13°N; 77.49°E) during 2020-2021. Pollinator effectiveness (PE) measured as pollen deposition stigmas per visit. Honey mainly collect nectar stingless (81.90%), bringing latter into intimate contact with stigma more frequently. Stingless bees, honey often seen foraging together same umbel, no antagonistic interactions observed. The rock bee (Apis dorsata) deposited a maximum number (34.60) visit followed by (24.45). pollinated had higher seed set percentage; weight 1000 seeds average seeds/umbels compared deprived pollinators. results allowed us conclude that effective pollinators onions. Further work needed determine optimum population required maximizing yield onion.

The foraging behaviour of honey bees, Apis mellifera: a review
Foraging behaviour is one of the distinctive behaviours of honey bees, Apis mellifera. This behaviour is the link between the honey bee colony and the ambient environment. Therefore, various in-colony and out-colony factors have an impact on this behaviour, and many studies have been employed to investigate these factors. Foraging behaviour is not advantageous only for the colony and for plant ...

متن کاملWild bees enhance honey bees' pollination of hybrid sunflower.
Pollinators are required for producing 15-30% of the human food supply, and farmers rely on managed honey bees throughout the world to provide these services. Yet honey bees are not always the most efficient pollinators of all crops and are declining in various parts of the world. Crop pollination shortages are becoming increasingly common. We found that behavioral interactions between wild and...
متن کاملPollen Foraging Response to Brood Pheromone by Africanized and European Honey Bees (Apis mellifera L.)
We examined the pollen foraging responses of Africanized and European honey bee colonies to hexane extractable compounds of Africanized and European larvae (brood pheromone). Brood pheromone was presented to broodless Africanized and European colonies equalized for numbers of bees, food stores and, empty comb space. The pheromone signiÞcantly increased the ratio of pollen to nonpollen foragers ...
متن کاملCocaine affects foraging behaviour and biogenic amine modulated behavioural reflexes in honey bees
In humans and other mammals, drugs of abuse alter the function of biogenic amine pathways in the brain leading to the subjective experience of reward and euphoria. Biogenic amine pathways are involved in reward processing across diverse animal phyla, however whether cocaine acts on these neurochemical pathways to cause similar rewarding behavioural effects in animal phyla other than mammals is ...
